On most days, fire fighters, paramedics, police, and other professional first responders are only minutes away when you call 911. However, when an earthquake or other large scale disaster strikes, you and your neighbors are your community's first responders.
The Los Angeles City Fire Department wants you to be prepared to help out when they cannot.
LAFD offers a free class to teach you the skills that could save not only your life but the life of someone in your family or neighborhood.
LAFD Battalion 2 is Northeast Los Angeles, comprised of the residental and light industrial areas situated in the hills east of the Los Angeles River and north of the 10 Freeway. Over 760,000 people live in Battalion 2, 1/5th of population in 1/14th of the geographic areas of the City of Los Angeles. Battalion 2 is located in LAFD Central Bureau along with Battalions 1 and 11.
The communities of Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Hermon, Monterey Hills, Sycamore Grove, El Sereno, Montecito Heights, Mt. Washington, Cypress Park, Glassell Park, Lincoln Heights, and Atwater Village are served by the dedicated fire fighters of Battalion 2.
CERT members are trained in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. You will learn how to prepare for emergencies, what supplies you should NOW have in your house, how much food, how much water but most importantly, how to protect your family in an emergency!
CERT Battalion 2 Coordinators Tom Wirth and Patrick Botz-Forbes are working to build teams in each of the communties of Battalion 2 and are actively looking for Team Leaders in each community.
Battalion 2 Neighborhood Teams will be able to deploy independently within their own communties and communicate with adjacent teams for backup and support during large scale disasters.
Training exercises and classes are being set up in Battalion 2 to give CERT members a chance to practice their skills and be able to better serve their communities and teams.
This site will be the hub of the Battalion 2 CERT providing a location to see a calendar with CERT events and trainings, documents published by the LAFD CERT Program and Battalion 2 specific plans. Neighborhood Team leaders will also be able to use this site to communicate with their teams and volunteers will be able to update their profiles and let us know what skills and training you have.
